Amnestic mild cognitive impairment

The importance of amnestic syndrome is research is substantial because it is single symptom impairment that provides rare views into the function of memory process.

The term amnestic mild cognitive impairment is used when memory is impaired and the term nonamnestic mild cognitive impairment is used for other types of mild cognitive deficits.

In amnestic mild cognitive impairment, neurodegeneration of an Alzheimer’s type is believed to be most common etiology.

Persons with amnestic mild cognitive impairment demonstrate nearly 10 times the risk of progressing to Alzheimer’s disease as do normal individuals.

However, depression or other psychiatric disorders, metabolic or medical disorders, trauma, substance abuse or medication reaction, and other conditions also may cause mild cognitive impairment of the various types.

Clinical criteria for amnestic mild cognitive impairment include:
*Subjective memory complaint
*Essentially normal general cognition
*Largely normal activities of daily living
*Objective memory impairment for age
*No dementia
