Wellness and Holistic model

There are five general approaches to defining health:
1. The medical model
2. The holistic model
3. The wellness model
4. The environment model
5. The eclectic model

The holistic, wellness model defines health in terms of the whole person, not in terms of diseased parts of the body. It is defined as a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being in which body, mind and spirit are integrated by the individual to live more fully within the human and natural community.

It focuses on optimal health, prevention of the disease and positive mental and emotional states.

Wellness is much more than physical health, it addresses mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person, as well as the relationship among these dimension. The whole is made up of four components: mind, body, spirit and emotions. It was suggested that holistic wellness is composed of the integration, balance and harmony of these four components.

Therefore, symptoms of illness and disease may be viewed as an imbalance in a person’s total state of being and not simply as the malfunction of a particular part of the body.
