Autogenic Training
Autogenic training uses autosuggestion to establish a balance between the mind and body through changes in the autonomic nervous system.
The method has been shown to be effective in reliving anxiety and improving the quality of life in people with chronic medical conditions.
Autogenic training involves learning to concentrate on one of six basic autogenic phrases for a few minutes each day over a week or more.
After weeks or months of practice , one is able to attain a deep sense of relaxation often within seconds, which can result in healthful physiological changes.
The German neurologist Johannes Heinrich Schultz (1884-1970) is credited with the development of promulgation of autogenic training, which he himself described as a self hypnotic procedure.
During his medical training in dermatology and neurology, Schultz became fascinated with heterohypnosis, which however, had a dubious image to many of his medical supervisors and peers at that time.
The breakthrough of autogenic training came after Shultz opened his own medical practice in neurology and psychiatry in Berlin in 1924.
