Relaxation Response

Relaxation Response
The relaxation response is an automatic physiological response that is the opposite of autonomic nervous system activation.

The relaxation response decreases oxygen consumption respiratory rate, heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension.

A variety of mind body methods can produce the relaxation response, such as mantra meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imaginary.

For example, patients are taught to sit quietly and silently repeat the word “one.” Methods that elicit the relaxation response share these feature:
*A quiet environment

*A focusing of the mind’s attention, such as silently repeating a word or phrase or focusing one’s breathing

*A passive, accepting mental state

*A comfortable physical position
